Brown Ledge Camp Dining Hall

This new dining hall, along the wooded shore of Lake Champlain, is the heart of Brown Ledge Camp. The camp had outgrown the capacity of the previous dining hall, and the kitchen desperately needed updating. The program called for a new dining hall to seat 270 campers and counselors in one seating -- all within sight and hearing distance of a speaker.

Constructed entirely of wood, this lodge building embodies the spirit of a rustic summer camp: exposed studs and rafters, carpenter-built windows with storm shutters, log columns that support the upper roof structure, and a large stone fireplace and hearth that serve as the focal point. The dining area adjoining the hearth is at a slightly lower level than the surrounding tables, to improve sight lines from every seat. The compact plan enables everyone to see and hear.

Because of the large seating area, the sloped roof structure gains sufficient height to accommodate reading lofts and meeting places at the upper levels. The shingled roof cascades down from a cupola on four sides, with projecting eaves and gables that allow natural light and air to penetrate the interior from many directions. The result is an airy shelter than fits easily into its wooded setting.
