Colby-Sawyer College LibraryColby-Sawyer College approached The Burley Partnership with a program for a new library, simultaneous with the opportunity to purchase an adjacent farm homestead. The College asked whether two large connected barns, with historic value, could possibly be adapted into the library. A feasibility study concluded that the mid-19th century barns were adaptable and that a modern 110,000 volume library could be achieved. Entered through the original silo, the library interior prominently exposes the hand-hewn post and beam heavy timber frame. In order to preserve the interiors, which are a major element of historic significance, new insulation was added to the exterior, over the old sheathing. The barns were then finished with new siding and roofing. To achieve additional reading space and take advantage of natural daylight and a wonderful view, split-level sheds were added along the southern elevations. Book stacks are all located within the original barns where low light levels are an advantage. Lofts, supported above the stacks by the original timber frame, provide additional study space. Through the careful documentation, design, and construction phases, these historic farm structures were successfully adapted for reuse as an academic learning center. This Project received national design awards from the American Library Association and the American Institute of Architects. Links to more information:
