Private Residence, Biscayne Bay, FLThe Burley Partnership designed two residences for the co-founder of Knoll Associates, an internationally acclaimed furniture company known for excellence in design. One in Vermont and another in Coral Gables, Florida. The design of the Florida House is an assemblage of one-story structures, each with a hipped clay-tile roof. Each roof eave is placed two feet away from the adjoining eave, with the space then bridged by clear glass skylights. These sky-lit slots create a sense of walking outdoors from one building to the next. The grid-pattern of natural daylight highlights linear plantings and a fine collection of weathervanes. Each structure houses several closely related activities: a large living space-service area, a master bedroom-dressing-bath-study, a dining room-service space, or a guest suite. The structures are arranged in a convenient circulation pattern and in a way that creates outdoor courtyards and landscape spaces. Several pools and fountains play a role within the grid pattern. The master bedroom opens to an elevated terrace and lap pool. A larger circular pool, designed for viewing as much as swimming, occupies the principal courtyard which opens on one side to the view of Biscayne Bay. The clean, precise detailing carries through the owner-designed interiors. |
