Trapp Family Lodge, Stowe, VTThe von Trapp Family, made famous by the 1965 musical, “The Sound of Music”, emigrated to Vermont during World War II and settled in the mountains near Stowe. When their original farm-lodge burned in 1976, The Burley Partnership was invited to design a new, much larger lodge that would still reflect their Austrian heritage. The new Lodge follows the contours of the hillside, with single-loaded corridors that provide all guest rooms with a view of the valley. By stepping the Lodge up the slope, every room has a balcony or terrace, and the upper level opens to the cross-country ski trails and walking paths. Entrance and dining room wings intersect this irregular plan and serve to reduce the building's scale. The principal orientation of the Lodge is to the south-east, with maximum solar heat gain benefits and with protection from northerly winds. Over the last thirty years, The Burley Partnership has had the privilege of planning and designing additional projects for the Trapp Family: a series of time-share guesthouses below the Lodge, a major expansion of guest rooms and conference facilities connected to the upper Lodge level, and within a short walk, a new community of Trapp Family Villas. The Villa site plan provides a series of meadow views within a wooded area. Utilizing a duplex floor plan, garages are juxtaposed to achieve full privacy between adjoining units. Screened porches, large stone fireplaces, and spacious proportions add to the attractiveness of the designs. Links to more information:
