Woodstock Inn, Woodstock, VTThe present Woodstock Inn was constructed in 1968 and has enjoyed an excellent reputation for both its accommodations and its dining. A generation later, it was in need of better conference and dining facilities, as well as additional guest rooms and suites. Woodstock, Vermont is a National Register Historic District with strict design review guidelines and review. The design challenge was to expand the Inn in a manner that would be compatible with the Village and to accomplish the expansion program within a very limited site. Kitchen and dining rooms were expanded by adding two levels of new space in back of the Inn. The new dining room was expressed by a very large, semi-circular bay window and a series of open porches and verandas, all of which overlook a putting green to the south. The Tavern, which had been an entirely interior space, was given its own connected building, with another open porch overlooking the village street. The original Inn was brick, painted white. The Burley Partnership architects felt that expanding with the same color would result in a building mass that would be too dominant for the Village. The guest rooms expansion therefore was given the form of three individual townhouses, all in natural red brick and similar in scale to other buildings in the Village. Because parking was at a premium on this restricted site, guest parking was incorporated underneath this new wing. The parking garage also offered excellent handicapped access. Construction took place in two phases, during which the Inn remained in continuous operation. The result was a “seamless” and very successful expansion. Links to more information:
